Approach & Values
Leckie Studio was founded to push the traditional boundaries of architectural practice as a catalyst for cultural change. Operating as a vehicle for creative speculation, the studio crafts singular, thought-provoking, and imaginative architectural work — rigorous, process-driven, and deeply collaborative. Their approach is rooted in a critical regionalist sensitivity, guided by the principle 'Less But Better,' and an essentialist methodology born from mindfulness practice. The studio self-performs digital visualizations and builds physical models, rigorously exploring ideas, valuing experimentation, and engaging in the habit of testing-to-failure. Sustainability is treated as an inherent responsibility, with project-specific benchmarks for longevity, resilience, and relevance. At its core, Leckie Studio creates a framework to connect people more closely with the experience of context and a larger sense of community.
“Design is speculation and architects are speculators. The most important thing in a young design practice — and perhaps in any design practice — is this idea about opportunity. The projects that you take on beget more of that kind of work. Opportunities lead to more opportunities.
The Firm
Singular, thought-provoking, and imaginative architectural work
Founded in 2015 by Michael Leckie in Vancouver, Leckie Studio Architecture + Design is an interdisciplinary 22-person practice operating across architecture, interiors, installations, and product design. The studio is rooted in a critical regionalist sensitivity and essentialist methodology — guided by the principle 'Less But Better' — and is recognized for projects that instil wonder, honour place, and create enduring connections between people and nature. International recognition includes the 2022 Architectural Record Design Vanguard, the 2021 RAIC Emerging Architectural Practice Award, the 2024 Architizer A+ Best Young Firm and Best Young Interior Design Firm, and the 2025 World Architecture Festival Urban House Category Winner for Lantern House.

Michael Leckie holds a Master of Architecture from the University of British Columbia (2003) and a BSc with studies in genetics and philosophy. He worked internationally in Greece and Italy early in his career before settling in British Columbia. He is co-founder of The Backcountry Hut Company (prefabricated modular shelters) and co-founder of Arcana (micro-hospitality in nature). An avid snowboarder and all-weather surfer, fungi forager, and someone who has planted nearly half a million trees, Leckie brings an unusually grounded, nature-connected perspective to architectural practice.
